Movie Review #17 - War for the Planet of the Apes (2017)
Caesar and his apes are forced into a deadly conflict with an army of humans led by a ruthless colonel. After the apes suffer unimaginable losses, Caesar wrestles with his darker instincts and begins his own mythic quest to avenge his kind. As the journey finally brings them face to face, Caesar and the colonel are pitted against each other in an epic battle that will determine the fate of both of their species and the future of the planet.

Why I Watched it:
Because Rise got me attached and Dawn blew me away.

My Thoughts (no penny needed):
This is an amazing movie. Last year, I would have told you Planet of the Apes is the dumbest thing ever (right next to Ninja Turtles). Now that I've seen the reboots, I want to see the originals. (kind of)
Everything in this movie is amazing. There are so many emotionalaly intense moments to go with the physically intense moments. Caesar's story and even further humanization in this movie is amazing.
I have not seen the original Planet of the Apes movies, but I have read about their stories and am really impressed about how they connected the movies in small ways. The score was not memorable, yet very, very emotional, and the same is true for the opening scene.
And in some crazy way, somehow... the animation improved from Dawn. I didn't know it was possible, but they did it. Shoot, this makes the new Jungle Book look like the 1967 one!
To wrap things up, Rise got me attached, Dawn blew me away and War rocked everything I know about movies.
The Characters:
Caesar: If Andy Serkis doesn't win an Oscar for this film...
Bad Ape: This character speaks unexpected humor and joy into a film where one would not expect it. Somehow it works, like really well!
Nova: I was a little let down she wasn't related to any humans we have seen before, but also blown away by her complexity and acting skills.
Maurice: I just love Maurice. His part in the very end of this film was a perfect send off to Ceasar and conclusion to the story. (Major spoiler in white)
Rocket: I feel like Rocket's story arc was main in the first two movies, and really takes a backseat in this film.
The Colonel: An amazing villain for an amazing movie. I wish his backstory was explored a little more, but what he did share was very impactful and shockingly relatable.
