Movie Review #9 - Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace (1999)

A Movie Review by Carter Rutledge for:

Movie Synopsis:

Anakin Skywalker, a young slave strong with the Force, is discovered on Tatooine. Meanwhile, the evil Sith have returned, enacting their plot for revenge against the Jedi.

MPAA Rating: PG

The Good: Darth Maul, the score, and the lightsaber battle.
The Bad: Jar Jar, Jar Jar, and Jar Jar.

Why I Watched it:

Uhh... I grew up watching this like every week. But my uncle was the one who introduced me to Star Wars.

My Thoughts (no penny needed):

I have most likely seen this movie more than any other Star Wars movie. When I was little, it was the only one I had on DVD. The worst of the saga, with cheesy lines, gaping plot holes, and JAR JAR. Now don't get me wrong, I still like this movie. The lightsaber battle at the end is da bomb, Qui-Gon kicks butt, and the space battles are amazing. (As long as it doesn't cut to Anakin) The podrace is awesome, but you are forced to sit there and watch it for at least 30 minutes! The cinematography is a higher point here, but it still remains the worst in the saga. I think part of the problem is, this is the only Star Wars movie to begin at a time of peace. All others begin with some kind of tyranny or evil force. Therefore, the movie has to give us that setup, which falls on its face.

I wish I could flip a switch and ignore it all and blindly love it, but I can't. Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace is a bad film.

The Characters:

Anakin: So. Annoying.

Obi-Wan: The start of a Jedi Master. His lines are cheesy, but somehow Ewan makes them work, even if it is a little.

Qui-Gon: The Obi-Wan to Anakin, Qui-Qon serves almost no purpose in this story when you think about it. But Liam Neeson's voice though!

Jar Jar: ðŸ˜ I liked this guy when I was little!

Darth Maul: Darth Maul is so sweet looking, and his chops with a lightsaber are some of the best. He just isn't in it enough! He also shouldn't have 'died'. His story continued in the TV shows really works well with this film, even if it is a little unrealistic.

Padme: Meh along with most characters in this movie. Also, what 14 year old falls in love with a 9 year old?!

My Favorite Character: Darth Maul

Villain Scale: 8

Hero Scale: 5

Directing: 5

Acting: 3

Visual Effects/Animation: 8
