Movie Review #6 - The Matrix (1999)
A Movie Review by Carter Rutledge for:
Set in the 22nd century, The Matrix tells the story of a computer hacker who joins a group of underground insurgents fighting the vast and powerful computers who now rule the earth.
MPAA Rating: R
The Good: STUNNING, STUNNING, STUNNING
The Bad: Slightly cheesy, and some bad language
Why I Watched it:
Heard about this movie since I was a wee lad, and thanks again to the great Netflix, the time had come for me to watch it.
My Thoughts (no penny needed):
Wow. Take a deep breath, that.. was... amazing.
Superb visuals and Christian allegories drive this amazing Sci-Fi movie. Bullet time was very impressive, as were the gun fights and various stunts. Great color and sets.
This movie is also so thought-provoking and does a good job of making you question reality. It's one of those movies that seems like Christopher Nolan wrote it, but he didn't. Neo being the One, a character named Trinity, and a death-then-rebirth make this a very deep philosophical story. I do think it could be interpreted many different ways though.
But let's get back to the visuals. Agent Smith's morphing thingy was super sweet, as was the 'bug' at the beginning. (As gross as that was) Also, why is everyone, everywhere wearing sunglasses and black spandex? These costume choices make this a little cheesy and outdated.
The Characters:
Neo: Our protagonist in this story, Neo perfectly represents at first us, then The Son. I really like how our perspective changes as we watch the film.
Trinity: Representing the Holy Ghost, Trinity even has a name pointing straight towards it! Her romance with Neo felt SUPER forced and natural though.
Morpheus: Ooo. The Father in my allegory, Morpheus is a great mentor to Neo and the rest of the gang. His cryptic lines and deep voice work so well!
Tank: I loved this guy so much, when he died, I literally screamed at the screen. But then, he came back and saved everyone! YAY!
Cypher: Oh so secretive, Cypher and his gerbil-like voice provides a secondary antagonist to this story, and does it wonderfully.
Agent Smith: Hehehe, one of the most iconic, menacing, and powerful villains in all of cinema history! Super-duper job by Hugo Weaving.
