Movie Review #5 - The Maze Runner (2014)

A Movie Review by Carter Rutledge for:

Movie Synopsis:

After his memory is erased, Thomas is deposited in a community of boys and soon learns they're all trapped in a maze that will require him to join forces with his fellow "runners" for a shot at escaping.
MPAA Rating: PG-13

The Good: Great adaption from the book, amazing visuals, and great cinematography.
The Bad: Acting was a little off, some plot holes, and some bad language.

Why I Watched it:

I saw this in theaters in 2014 after a friend loaned me the book, and have watched it a couple of times since.

My Thoughts (no penny needed):

The perfect representation of the book, things that were changed were necessary, and it felt like reading the book. That said, there is some acting problems here. Newt, Gally, and Minho were good, Thomas, Alby and Chuck were okay, and Teresa and the extras were pretty bad.  Cinematography is really nice here, with lots of opportunities for cool shots and sequences with this idea. The Grievers were extremely well done effects, and perfectly carried over from the book, though the author didn't describe them that much. I just don't get why they don't climb out. At then end, you can clearly see the vines go straight to the top. Even if they didn't, why didn't they just cut down trees and build a ladder??

*sigh* I don't know.

The Characters:

Thomas: Our protagonist in this story, Thomas is slightly annoying. He pretends like he knows everything, thinks he can do anything, and tries to tell the older, wiser people what to do.

Teresa: *Shivers* Her face creeps me out. I don't think they could've chosen a worse actress for here character. She says every line monotone and lifeless.

Newt: YAY! A good actor! I loved Newt's role in this movie. I grew up watching this guy on Nanny McPhee and when I saw him in this, he was even better. By far one of the best child/teen actors ever.

Gally: Exactly who he plays in Narnia, and annoying, violent, and whiny kid. Good acting though.

Alby: The first one in The Maze, Alby's healing process and story arch is great.

Chuck: He reminds me of the fat kid in the Goonies, Chunk. His story arch with the carving is splendid, and I sure hope in the third movie Thomas can find his parents.

Minho: Asians always steal the show. He is so cool!

My Favorite Character: Minho

Final Ratings:
Note: Ratings go up to 10, 1 being the worst.

Villain Scale(Gally): 8.5

Hero Scale: 5

Directing: 7

Acting: 6.5

Visual Effects/Animation: 9
