Movie Review #4 - The Little Prince (2015)
A Movie Review by Carter Rutledge for:
Based on the best-seller book ‘The Little Prince’, the movie tells the story of a little girl that lives with resignation in a world where efficiency and work are the only dogmas. Everything will change when accidentally she discovers her neighbor that will tell her about the story of the Little Prince that he once met.
MPAA Rating: PG
The Good: Phenomenal storytelling, great score, amazing animation and lovable, meaningful characters.
The Bad: Well... I...
Why I Watched it:
Scrolling through the infinite libraries of Netflix once again...
My Thoughts (no penny needed):
"It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye."
I LOVE this movie. The animation, the story, the metaphorical-ness, the acting, and the cinematography. This is by far the most cinematic animated film ever. All of the actors are spot one here, but Jeff Bridges rises above once again. Every movie he stars in is incredible, including The Little Prince. Every time I watch this movie I discover another small detail the writers/director snuck in there of super-fans like me. This movie makes me so happy, sad, and amazed all at once. I usually don't hand out the word "perfect" to any film, but this is one that almost reaches that bar.
If you haven't watched this movie, GO DO IT NOW. It is so amazing. I can't believe how many people haven't seen or didn't like this movie. For some reason it just grabbed me hard, and never let go. I really enjoyed the score as well, and also I noticed they never say "Adult" in the entire movie, they always say "Grown-up". This to me shows that the film is shown through the eyes of a child, not a grown-up.
It is funny when it needs to be, heartfelt, sad, and exiting all in one package. Just watch it.
Think Peter Pan, but better.
The Characters:
The Little Prince: So God-like in a good way. He, to me, is almost like the weird kid in Exodus: Gods and Kings (in a good way). His relationship with The Rose works so well, because of The Aviator's one line: “The shame of it was that they loved each other. But they were both too young to know how to love.”
The Little Girl: Amazing representation of an over-pressured child here. Her wonder at even the smallest things really shines light on her sheltered life. Her father situation is expressed perfectly in subtle ways.
The Aviator: Amazing performance by Jeff Bridges here. His humor, his wit, and his demeanor is exactly what he needed to be. A child in a man's body. His encounters with The Little Prince were great, and his spontaneous decisions were great!
The Mother: Exactly what was needed here in this role. A strict, yet redeemable grown-up.
The Fox: Amazing in the flesh, and in stuffed form.
The Rose: Conceited, beautiful, and young, The Rose's role really works here.
The Businessman: Our villain of sorts in this film, The Businessman represents almost an opposite of The Aviator, a grown-up who forgot his childhood.
Parallel Characters: The Conceited Man(Police Officer), The King(Elevator Operator) and The Snake(Teacher). All of these characters represent another grown-up's personality. They all were(presumably) children once, but one by one, they all grew up.
