Movie Review #3 - The Lego Batman Movie (2017)
A Movie Review by Carter Rutledge for:
A cooler-than-ever Bruce Wayne must deal with the usual suspects as they plan to rule Gotham City, while discovering that he has accidentally adopted a teenage orphan who wishes to become his sidekick.
MPAA Rating: PG
The Good: Neat animation, half-good humor, and awesome Batman references.
The Bad: Half-bad humor, weird stuff, and unlikable Batman.
Why I Watched it:
Little brother received this for his birthday, and I like LEGO and Batman so.... I watched it with him.
My Thoughts (no penny needed):
Mindless action. Weird humor. Unlikable main character. These are a few of my least favorite things about this movie. Jokes about two dads, the awful butt-mobile joke and whinny Batman shy me away from really enjoying this adventure. Batman literally acts like a toddler, whit Alfred acting as his surrogate father. The villain references are great, but while that worked in 2014's The LEGO Movie, it didn't fit here. The whole Joker-Batman 'relationship' idea is weird in my opinion as well.
Don't get me wrong, it has its funny moments, it has enjoyable classic villains, and great animation. But at it's heart, at the heart of any story, should be a likable main character. Sure, he has redemption at the end, but throughout the movie Batman makes unwise and bad choices. He puts people's live on the line, and is so self-obsessed it drives me crazy!
As much as I heard good things about this movie, when I finally got to watch it, I was really let down. The LEGO Movie is far better, and this one felt almost like a blatant rip-off.
The Characters:
Batman: I just... I... as much as I like Christian Bale's Batman, as much as I tolerated Ben Affleck's Batman, I even liked this character in The LEGO Movie. It reminds me of The Minions. In Despicable Me, they worked great, but in a film centers on them, if fell flat on it face. Lego Batman works better as a side character, an almost antagonist to Emmet.
Robin: He's great! I really liked his vulnerability and child-like mind. The joke about his name was a little off putting for me. But man, those glasses.
Alfred: Yes. Reminds me a lot of The Dark Knight Trilogy's Alfred, which is great. The Mister Sixties costume was a blast as well.
Joker: Out of all of the Joker's in the film/TV/Video Game worlds, this one is not the worst. (Suicide Sqaud is) His motives are extremely refreshing, considering it is not world domination, power, nor money.
Barbra Gordon: I don't get it. Batman has his whole "Just Died in Your Arms" moment, but if he has been working with comes Commissioner Gordon for 50 years, I would assume he knew his daughter.
My Favorite Character: Alfred Pennywise
Final Ratings:
Note: Ratings go up to 10, 1 being the worst.
Villain Scale: 6
Hero Scale: 3.5
Directing: 7
Acting: 8.5
Visual Effects/Animation: 10
The Movie as a Whole: 6
