Movie Review #15 - The Empire Strikes Back (1980)
A Movie Review by Carter Rutledge for:
The adventure continues in this "Star Wars" sequel. Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, Princess Leia and Chewbacca face attack by the Imperial forces and its AT-AT walkers on the ice planet Hoth. While Han and Leia escape in the Millennium Falcon, Luke travels to Dagobah in search of Yoda. Only with the Jedi master's help will Luke survive when the dark side of the Force beckons him into the ultimate duel with Darth Vader.
MPAA Rating: PG
The Good: Amazing score, A+ tone and pacing.
The Bad: Really not much at all....

Why I Watched it:
I can't remember my first time seeing this movie.

My Thoughts (no penny needed):
In my opinion, the best Star Wars movie by far. I understand it is the majority's opinion that this is the best, but when you watch them all in one day it really becomes quite clear.
The lovable characters, the thrilling action scenes, the menacing villain, and the long, hard journey of a young hero, this movie has it all. The Battle of Hoth ranks just under Geonosis as the best ground battle for me. The lightsaber duel is just stunning, and Han in carbonate is a chilling wake up call for our heroes. Not many movies where the heroes lose can be called great, but Empire isn't just great, it's beyond that.
Luke's personal journey, along with Han+Leia's romantic journey work very well side-by-side in this film. Boba Fett looks cool, but does next to nothing. Nothing. N-O-T-H-I-N-G. The Special Edition changes actually work in this one. Cleaning up Cloud City with windows, adding new ships and such.
To sum things up, I love this movie, and not many sequels are better than the original.

The Characters:
Luke Skywalker: Luke begins a very dark and personal journey in this film. He is tempted by the dark side, and must face his father. He is perfect in this film, besides when he is with Leia.
Leia Organa: Why does she gotta kiss Luke? Knowing what we know, it is just weird. Other than that she is a great character with great personality.
Han Solo: Good in the first one, and great in this one, Han Solo brings the sarcasm, heroics, and romance to this film.
Chewbacca: Funnier, and tougher than last time, Chewie even assists in saving C-3PO.
R2-D2: Going with Luke to Dagobah, R2 and Yoda's exchange is perfect!
C-3PO: Staying with Han+Leia, 3PO is the bumbling idiot every movie needs.
Darth Vader: Scarier, meaner, and more threatening, Darth Vader looms large over the Rebellion and must face his son on Cloud City.
Yoda: Amazing introduction here. His humor, yet seriousness is perfect. If they had left him out of the prequels, he would be even better here.
Lando Calrissian: Man, I love this guy. Besides betraying out heroes, he has charm, wit, and looks almost matching Han's.
