Movie Review #12 - The Truman Show (1998)

A Movie Review by Carter Rutledge for:

Movie Synopsis:

Truman Burbank lives a happy life. However, what he doesn't know is that his life is actually the focus of a reality TV show aired since his birth, that he's the star, his hometown is a giant set piece, and that everyone around him is an actor.
MPAA Rating: PG

The Good: Acting, sets, writing, amazing emotion and creativity
The Bad: It is a little bit slow, and has some bad language.

Why I Watched it:

After my dad showed me the ending when I was little, I wanted to know about that door. When I saw it on Amazon last year, I jumped on the opportunity.

My Thoughts (no penny needed):

Wow. I wrote this review on my third viewing of this film, and it is so much better than it was before. I can not stop thinking of anything but this movie for two whole days. I can't explain it easily, but this movie is just so powerful. All of my favorite movies are my favorite for different reasons, and the Truman Show is no exception. My biggest issue with it is the pacing, but when I think about how you could cut something out, I realize you can't! Every scene, every character, every hidden camera, and every line is there for a reason. Everything affects something else in the movie.

Most everyone would agree that they don't live in a TV show... but some would think so just from this film. I think it is more a film about humanity, and the lengths we will go on a hunch. Sometimes, we find a dead end, sometimes we find the opposite of what we thought we would... But ever so rarely we find exactly what we thought we would.

Doubts are a part of being human, it's who we are. Don't push away your doubts, I think it's best to live with those doubts, and when we can, sail across the ocean to find a door, our door...

Waiting for us with the truth.

The Characters:

Truman Burbank: Barely ever is the main character in a movie my favorite character, but here... he is most definitely my favorite.

Kristof: Ed Harris is a master actor. In every film he is in, he completely changes who he is, which is essential to being an actor.

Meryl Burbank: Truman's wife, Meryl is almost an antagonist nearing the end of the story, which is very interesting.

Marlon: Truman's best bud, Marlon, is always with a beer at hand. I think he is the only member of the cast that truly cares for Truman at some level. He wants Truman to get out, but he doesn't want to get fired.

Lauren/Sylvia:
Truman's forbidden love, Lauren is her name to Truman, but Sylvia is who she is at the end. Just that one shot of her smiling at the TV is pure magic.

My Favorite Character: Truman Burbank
My Favorite Scene: The very end scene.

Final Ratings:
Note: Ratings go up to 10, 1 being the worst.

Hero Scale: 10

Directing: 9

Acting: 10

Visual Effects/Animation: 8

Cinematography: 8

Writing: 9.5
